Abhaya Mudra

(Fearlessness and courage)

  • Fearlessness and courage, symbolizing harmony, strength, and protection. Relaxes the nervous system, reduces stress, and regulates breathing. Induces a sense of safety, reduces anxiety, and builds confidence. Often practiced with Gayatri Mantra recitation.

    • Sit comfortably with a straight spine.

    • Raise your right hand to chest level, with the elbow bent and palm facing outward.

    • Keep the left hand resting on your lap or palm upward.

    • Breathe deeply

Apan Vayu Mudra

(Regulates heartbeat)

  • Regulates heartbeat, and regular practice assists in preventing heart attacks, palpitations, tacho-cardia, or a sinking feeling of the heart. In a severe heart attack, if administered within the first two seconds, it provides instant relief. Also known as the "Mritsanjeevini Mudra", meaning "One which brings back life out of death".

    • Sit comfortably in a seated meditation pose with a straight spine.

    • Press index finger to pad of thumb.

    • Tips of middle and ring fingers touch tip of thumb.

    • Smallest finger extends straight out.

Apana Mudra

(Detoxification and improved digestion)

  • Apana Mudra balances earth and space elements, promoting detoxification, improved digestion, and emotional grounding.

    • Begin in a comfortable meditative pose with a straight spine.

    • Join the tips of the middle finger (ether/space) and ring finger (earth) with the tip of the thumb (fire) on both hands.

    • Keep the index and little fingers extended.

    • Rest hands on the thighs/knees, palms facing up.

  • Practice for 5 to 15 minutes, or up to 30–45 minutes daily for chronic issues.

Prana Mudra

(Improves eyesight, increases "life force" energy)

  • Improves eyesight, increases "life force" energy, vitality, and self confidence. Useful for people feeling nervous, tired, or weak, or for treating life-threatening illnesses. Along with the Apan Vayu Mudra, precedes meditation by the Yogis and saints.

    Prana Mudra is primarily associated with the Root Chakra (Muladhara), as it stimulates dormant energy at the base of the spine. It enhances the Earth and Water elements while decreasing the Fire element.

    • Sit comfortably with a straight spine.

    • Touch tip of ring finger and smallest finger to tip of thumb.

    • Remaining fingers touch each other and extend straight out.

  • Can be done for any length of time, any time, any place, as even small amounts of this mudra are beneficial.
